<image:title>Sailing Barge Blue Mermaid</image:title>
<image:caption>The high water on the morning of the 30th of April 2019 brought with it the first sail for Blue Mermaid. Various skippers, crew and supporters joined Richard and Hilary for the ensuing three day “shake down” sail. Any alterations that were deemed necessary were noted and began as soon as she was back at the yard. After almost a month of finishing touches, coats of paints and various cleats being welded on Blue Mermaid invited their first group on board on the 28th of May.</image:caption>

<image:title>Jasmin Klimcke - Jas in her own words…</image:title>
<image:caption>“I have always been messing around on the water from a young age, I brought my first boat aged nine, it was a small one man topper and this was when I began to understand wind and tide and how many mud banks there are in the Blackwater Estuary. Since then I had many more small boats and started crewing on a 42 ft smack called “Charlotte Ellen” aged 11. This is when I knew what I wanted to do, but didn't realise there wasan opportunity out there to help me do it. I spoke to my teachers at school and spoke to some old sailors in Tollesbury and asked if they knew anyone, they mentioned TS Rigging in Maldon. I finished my exams at school aged 16 and began working at Down Road Boatyard to learn the trade of traditional and modern rigging. I was then taken on as an apprentice by the foundation and I didn’t realise then the incredible places it would take me and the great people I would meet. During my time I’ve learnt key rig access, and spent many hours working at height aboard the Cutty Sark and other vessels, as well as the core fundamentals of boatbuilding around the yard including traditional wooden block making and steaming mast hoops as well as rigging, such as serving, knots, taluriting and splicing in the rigging shed. The Heritage Marine Foundation which is the charitable arm of both TS Rigging Ltd and Heritage Marine Ltd, have helped me achieve my STCW 95 certificates, VHF licence, my Seaman's discharge book and start to build of sea miles to gain my commercial yacht master certificate. Because of them I have helped to deliver several Oyster yachts to the Mediterranean, I sail as relief mate on sailing barge Victor, sailed as Bosun on Sail training yacht Faramir from the UK, France then to Belgium and back and have been a deckhand onboard Schooner Atlantic. Because of these experiences I feel a lot more confident in myself and the decisions I make when sailing or working, for example I have my own boat “ Pelican” she is a 22ft gaff cutter which I sail on my own, I am going to enter Mersea week 2017 which will be my first racing experience as skipper in my own boat. After 2 years learning a trade and working in the boatyard, I feel comfortable in the rigging shop on my own managing and making orders whether that be modern yacht rigging or traditional. I also get to drive to different boatyards and marinas to do rigging, mainly yachts. In the future I wish to get into the classic yacht scene as a deckhand or potentially mate and bring my woodworking and rigging skills while still being associated with the barges and smacks of the East Coast, I hope I never lose contact with my home roots and my traditional upbringing.” Since finishing her apprenticeship Jasmin has worked on many different vessels such as J-classes, schooners and many more. She then came back to the yard and is now a director of and runs TS Rigging & Marine Services</image:caption>

Jasmin has carried out maintence and refit works on the The Clipper Ship “Cutty Sark“, the sloop “HMS Gannet” as well as operational square rigged sailing ships, Thames Barges, Traditional Fishing Smacks, classic yachts, including “Atlantic“ as well as modern yachts to include full reriggs of both types.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“ I started sailing my Optimist at Blackwater Sailing club as a cadet when I was 8. I really enjoyed local club racing and found myself sailing every weekend throughout the summer. I met some amazing sailors at my local club and got offered the chance to crew on a moody 38 for the 2018-2019 Fastnet race, It was an incredible opportunity and an experience I won’t forget. I then became cadet commadore aged 17, where I was a sailing instructor for younger cadets, I really enjoy teaching people how to sail and watch their confidence grow. I started working at Downs Road Boatyard when I was 16 as a summer job. In 2020 I started my apprenticeship with the Heritage Marine Foundation. I was overwhelmed with how many different trades and jobs I covered in such a short space of time, my first job was to strip down a beta 20 engine, rebuild it and then instal it into a work boat. Over the last 4 years I have learnt engineering, welding, rope work and rigging and manoeuvring boats. In 2022 I bought a 30ft Essex Fishing Smack called Katie, I had never sailed a gaff rigged boat before so it was going to be a big learning curve. I was very lucky to have people around me to teach me the ropes. I have now sold Katie to buy a bigger, engineless smack called Polly, this again is a big learning curve as she does not have an engine so I have to think about the wind and the tide constantly, the more I do it, the more confident I get. Smack sailing has introduced me to a community where I have made friends for life. I am currently in my final year of Level 3 Maritime Engineering Technician Apprenticeship, once this is complete I wish to work as a 2nd engineer on big workboats or yachts, working up to chief engineer in the future”</image:caption>

<image:caption>I first sailed onboard a Thames barge at the age of 14 which ignited the burning passion for all things nautical that I still hold to this day. I joined the foundation at 17 with a slight grasp on the trade from previous jobs in boatyards, experience on barges and attempted maintenance of my own small fibreglass yacht. The knowledge gained from my course was in constant use not only in work but in the lifestyle that is developed as a result of complete emersion in this industry and the art. Myself and other apprentices attend smack and barge races together which is highly encouraged and accommodated as it gives us an opportunity to learn and develop our skills together, making us more efficient as a team even if we are not aboard the same vessel. My time spent at the foundation has most defiantly shaped me as a person, I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have had this experience and completed it to absolution. I look forward to seeing others learn and grow through this experience.</image:caption>

<image:title>Adam Pain - Adam in his own words…</image:title>
<image:caption>I developed a passion for sailing at a young age, starting with Toppers and Lasers at my local sailing club. This early experience instilled in me a passion for sailing and an appreciation for boats and the water. At 17, I began my career at Heritage Marine Foundation with minimal prior experience in boat maintenance. Through dedication and hands-on practice, I quickly gained a diverse and valuable skill set, establishing a solid foundation in the marine industry. Over my time at Heritage Marine Foundation, I have contributed to significant projects, including the rigging and maintenance of historic vessels such as the Cutty Sark, HMS Gannet, and numerous Thames barges and smacks. These experiences have deepened my expertise in traditional and modern maritime techniques. Over the past four years, I’ve been part of a dedicated team at the Heritage Marine Foundation that has worked on the construction of a 52-foot steel ketch. This ambitious project presented both challenges and rewards, allowing me to apply the knowledge gained during my boatbuilding course to a real-world scenario. It also enabled me to refine my skills and deepen my expertise in boat construction. The Heritage Marine Foundation team has provided me with the opportunity to sail many of these historic vessels outside of work. This experience has significantly enhanced my understanding of their operation and design while fostering a strong sense of community and camaraderie within the sailing network. I take great pride in being part of a dedicated community of highly skilled professionals committed to preserving historic vessels and maintaining traditional maritime craftsmanship for future generations.</image:caption>
